Apprenticeships and vacancies at Cockwells

apprenticepicBoatbuilding apprenticeships with Cockwells

A life in boatbuilding may not make you rich but it can be one of the most rewarding careers there is.

Working at Cockwells, for example, introduces apprentices to a wealth of interesting projects, a requirement for a high level of detail and a never-ending supply of interesting challenges.

We run our own apprenticeship programme and advertise vacancies on this site as and when they become available. Cockwells is a commercial boatbuilding company rather than a training provider and therefore availablity depends upon workload and the progression rates of our existing apprentices.

Our programme consists of a full-time position, where the trainee receives 'on the job' training from experienced boatbuilders. The trainee has a formal skills review every six months to assess and record skills development and performance.

A formal NVQ certified boatbuilding apprenticeship programme has been developed with input from Dave Cockwell. The programme, available to view at www.eal.org.uk, is run in conjunction with Cornwall College. This programme involves the apprentice going to college one day a week as well as working four full days per week at the yard.

We are happy to support apprentices wishing to embark on this programme. The apprentice will be assessed regularly by an NVQ assessor and must be committed to full attendance, taking responsibility for developing their portfolio of work evidence.

Jake Buchanan

  • Jake Buchanan - Apprentice
  • Jake came to us from the Isles of Scilly where he grew up with an interest in boating and D.I.Y. It was the wooden boat that he received for his 15th birthday however that really got him into boat building as he found he enjoyed repairing and restoring it. He then decided boat building was for him and came to Cockwells to learn new skills and techniques.

Rory Bosher

  • Rory Bosher - Apprentice
  • Rory has always enjoyed building boats which is why he approached Cockwells to gain experience in the industry. He hopes to one day be a fully qualified boat builder. Rory is a keen surfer and likes to go bike riding in his spare time.
