Princess Royal visits Cockwells
Applause greeted the launch, by the Princess Royal, of the first production boat built by Cockwells Classic and Modern Boatbuilding, in Cornwall in July 2011.
The Duchy 27 is the first semi-production motor yacht from Cockwells who are known for the quality of their bespoke and wooden yachts.
It was launched at the Mylor Creek boatyard on July 18, as part of a Royal visit to Cornwall.
The first Duchy 27 has already been sold and interest is running high in the boat following first glimpses and sea trials.
In 2010 Cockwells acquired the rights to build and market the Aquila motor launch under their own brand.
The Cockwells team spent months refining and developing the design to relaunch it as the Duchy 27 — the first in a range of motor launches from the new Duchy Motor Launches marque.
The Duchy 27's predecessor, the Aquila, earned enthusiastic testimonials from the yachting press for being a handsome yacht with versatile weekend accommodation, elegant styling and classic looks, including kind remarks from yacht design legend Peter Nicholson, who owns one.
The new Duchy 27 is expected to win praise for her enhanced specification and build quality. The new cockpit design enables a capacious and convivial seating arrangement and the hand-built interior exudes class and quality.
Cockwells’ engineering innovation, boatbuilding expertise and quality craftsmanship combine to produce a quieter and more refined motor yacht with a flush-fitted transom door to give ease of access.
She is fitted with the new generation 200hp Toyota-based Nanni diesel engine giving her a comfortable cruising speed of 15 knots and a predicted maximum speed of 22 knots. These engines, used in the Toyota Land Cruiser, are renowned for their reliability, quietness and smoothness.
