
New Boatbuilding qualification available in partnership with Cornwall College
Cornwall college have announced the launch of the new Boatbuilding NVQ course available from January 2007. Dave Cockwell was consulted by the learning skills council for help in defining the content of the course. The course forms part of an apprentiship programme whereby the trainee attends college one day a week and takes a placement in a commercial marine business 4 days per week, giving the trainee the benefit of both a formal qualification whilst also gaining valuable hands-on skills and experience of working in a commercial environment. Any new apprentices to join Cockwells will be offered the opportuntity to do this programme if they so wish.
The new boatbuilding qualification covers the following skills, of which a selection can be chosen in conjunction with the workplace employer;

- Structural Steelwork
- Mechanical Installation and Testing
- Mechanical Maintenance
- Mechanical Overhaul
- Woodwork / Outfitting
- Interior Finishing

- Marine Welding
- Coating
- Rigging
- Mooring and Berthing
- Electromechanical
- Painting and Finishing
