Argyll

Classic yacht Argyll in for refit

Built in 1946 by Simms Brothers to an Olin Stephens design, Argyll is a classic ocean racing yacht.

Dave Cockwell first encountered her when she arrived in Bristol at the Underfalls Yard with a team of private shipwrights as structural investigation showed that a full rebuild would be required.

Years later Cockwells was asked to look after the boat in Falmouth by Jeremy Turner, her then-owner. Jeremy brought Argyll to Cockwells for various finishing off works and the company has carried out routine maintenance on the boat since.

Argyll made her name winning numerous races including a class win in the Newport to Bermuda race.

In her time, a yacht such as Argyll will have seen many shipwrights and will have been to many boatyards. Cockwells is pleased to have been part of keeping her going and in top condition.

Cockwells ensured the quality of work on this classic yacht was of an extremely high standard from the joinery and finishing that the yard undertook to the project management of other trades involved.

As part of the major internal refinishing and external refit, a full rig rebuild was carried out by David Carne of Riggers UK, new sails and sail repairs were done by SKB Sails and a new mizzen mast was commissioned from Noble Spars.

All fitting and finishing was carried out by Cockwells, right down to a nice new coat of sparkling white paint. Argyll is a testament to the skills of the Cockwells craftsmen responsible for her fit out and finish.
