All of our craftsmen has a lifelong passion for traditional, bespoke methods; each has skills and experience all but lost in the modern boat building industry. Dave Cockwell Dave Cockwell:
The founder of Cockwell’s Modern and Classic Boatbuilders. Having dedicated his entire working life to the building and restoring of wooden boats, Dave is a skilled shipwright, and has extensive experience in every type of hull construction and joinery. Driven by the search for the ultimate challenge, Dave likes nothing more than to restore the boats that other builders tell him simply cannot be restored…
Jonny Mills Johnny Mills:
Head Shipwright. A graduate from Falmouth Marine School, Jonny has spent the last 18 years working on a great variety of vessels, including many large square-rigged timber ships.
Philip Austin Philip Austin:
Han experienced shipwright who joined Cockwells in February of this year. Originally trained at Falmouth Marine School, Philip has spent the last six years working on refits and repairs at Mylor Yacht Harbour. A sailor with a passion for wooden boats, Philip has spent 18 months restoring his own Folkboat and has recently acquired a gaff cutter as his next project.
Michael Boyd Michael Boyd:
Skilled craftsman. Mike is a graduate of the IBTC College in Lowestoft, and has 3 years experience in the industry, previously working at Rustler Yachts before joining us at Cockwells in May 2006.
William Anderson-Lambert William Anderson-Lambert:
Billy has completed a 4 year apprenticship with us. His skills, knowledge and experience have developed tremendously over this period and he has been and continues to be an asset to the team. We now look forward to being able to offer greater responsibility and more challenging projects, enabling him to continue on his path to becoming a highly skilled boatbuilder.
Craig Chad Craig Chad:
2nd year apprentice and graduate of the Lyme Regis Boatbuilding Academy, Craig joined Cockwells in November 2005 and continues to further his knowledge and skills. He has recently completed the lofting for our 'new build' passenger ferry, which is an integral part of the boatbuilding process.
David Brunyee David Brunyee:
1st year apprentice and graduate of the IBTC College in Lowestoft. David has the benefit of experience in restoring his own 40ft Westerman, he is making excellent progress in developing his natural talent.
Dan Broadley:
joined Cockwells most recently in January 2008, having previously worked as Maintenance Manager for Bristol Ferry Boat Co.
Joe Cole Joe Cole:
our youngest apprentice left school in July 2007 having just completed GCSE's at Penryn College and immediately began his apprenticeship at Cockwells.
Finlay Robertson:
joined Cockwells in June 2007 having just completed the Boatbuilding Level 2 course at Falmouth Marine School.
Matthew Saunders:
joined Cockwells in September 2007 having just completed the Boatbuilding Level 2 course at Falmouth Marine School.
Damian Lyall:
joined October 2007 having just completed a boatbuilding course at the International Boatbuilding Training College in Lowestoft. This is a complete career change for Damian who previously worked for the Home Office as a Forensic Scientist.
Jo Clarkson, Marketing & PR:
Jo brings a wealth of experience to the team having previously owned her own successful business. Jo is also Dave Cockwells wife, they moved together from Bristol to Falmouth in 2002, and Jo's support, drive and enthausiam has been key to the development of the business to date. Jo works for the company on a part-time basis.
Nigel Sharp Nigel Sharp – General Manager:
Nigel has over 33 years experience in the boatbuilding industry, and has worked at Camper and Nicholsons, Southampton Yacht Services and Rival/Bowman Yachts, amongst others. Whilst working as a Project Manager for most of the last 20 years, his restoration projects have included Seven Seas (the 1937 12-metre Class yacht, the first to be built in America), Atlantide (the 122 ft Alfred Mylne gentleman's motor yacht built in 1930), Blue Leopard (the 112 ft Laurent Giles cold moulded 1963 ketch), Quiver V (built for the 1969 Admirals' Cup, the last traditionally-built wooden sailing boat to come out of Camper & Nicholsons), Velsheda (the J-Class yacht), Ilona of Kylesku (the 98 ft 1907 gentleman's motor yacht) and Merrymaid (the 1904 Camper and Nicholsons gaff cutter). His new-build projects have included three strip-planked sailing boats between 55 ft and 82 ft.

Nigel has a passion for wooden yachts (he has his own Folkboat, the restoration of which he completed 10 years ago, and is a member of a Falmouth Working Boat syndicate) and is bringing plenty of experience and direction to the growing Cockwells team. He was born in St Mawes and so has recently returned to his Cornish roots.
Teresa Trenoweth:
Teresa is a valuable member of the office team dealing with all our accounting processes. Teresa is a local Falmouth girl and is also a very keen & experienced sailor, both of which are an asset to the team.
Andrew Squibb Andrew Squibb – Marine Project Engineer:
Graduated from the University of Southampton in July 2005 with a Master of Engineering degree in Ship Science (Naval Architecture). Following graduation Andrew worked for Lloyds Register for 2 years and then joined Cockwells in November 2007. Andrew is responsible for design calculations, component specifications, product purchasing and technical reports.
